Elder Gerald R. Buckner and Sister Shirley Buckner, of Hurricane, Utah, have been called to be the new directors for the Willie's 6th Crossing Handcart Site, which is part of the Mormon Historic Martin Handcart Site in Wyoming. They replace Elder and Sister Gardner of Delta, Utah.
The Buckners, who have been serving a six-month mission for the second time at the Willie's Site, will have their mission extended for another year through September 2010.
"When we received the call, I was overwhelmed," Gerald Buckner said. "I appreciate the confidence of the church leaders who issued the call. We are excited for this new responsibility."
Thousands of young people visit the site to have a handcart experience.
"It is just a complete joy to me to see these young people in pioneer costume come here without iPods, cell phones, and pull or push a handcart with only 17 pounds of personal belongings on it," Shirley Buckner said. "I see a large change for the better in these youth when they begin to understand the pioneers."
