Get out of the bubble and live life!
I recounted last week an observation on my personal blog about experiencing life in the big city. It got me thinking about my next topic, which is best summed up with the question that consumed my thoughts that day:
Why are you still living in Utah?
Of course, there is nothing wrong with living in Utah. For all intents and purposes, we could consider any place. But, this location lends itself perfectly for my allegory. The gist of the question spawned the idea of leaving the Mormon proverbial "bubble."
It's no mystery that Mormons from across the world converge upon the Beehive State. More often than not, this movement is coupled with the intent of obtaining a higher education with like-minded individuals.
Could there be an ulterior motive? Finding a worthy suitor? Alas, not all obtain the ring of eternity upon graduation.
Without pointing the finger of shame toward those who have graduated college without the coveted MRS degree, let me first say, I graduated single from Zoobie-central. That's nothing to be ashamed of.
In Utah, however, missing out on marriage during a college tenure can leave one wanting, and thinking: "After graduating, I'll just stay here one more year. I'll get married, and then pursue my life's aspirations." Unfortunately, one year becomes two ... and so forth.
After a couple of years pass, reviewing life's list of ambitions becomes unbearable. We've put our dreams of traveling the world on hold for so long only to hope for obtaining a "higher" goal. Truth be told, staying in Utah isn't going to get one to the altar any faster -- that's just going to happen in due time.
Soon, the next question arises: "Why wait on marriage to enjoy life?"
Now, I'm not making the suggestion that we give up on relationships, but rather put things into perspective. These pivotal moments in life allow us to evaluate and make adjustments. There are a myriad of things to accomplish, so why not go out and pursue them? If we wait for the perfect time to enjoy the perfect event with the perfect person, we've perfected the art of procrastination.
We all have our bucket lists. Don't wait for the timing to be perfect; invoke the powers of Nike, and just do it.
If that means taking drastic measures and moving, then get out of the bubble!
